INCO

In 1884 the Stobie ore body was discovered. 15 years later the Frood ore body was found.
But in a bizarre twist it was found that INCO's Frood and Mond's Stobie was a shared ore body
which made way for the creation of the Frood-Stobie mine. In order to continue mining the body
the two companies had to collaborate. On January first, 1929, Mond and Inco amalgamated and
all the proceeding operations were carried out under Inco's name.

Nickel in the area of Sudbury was discovered in 1856, but because of a lack of demand for
the metal and the expense of extracting it, mining did not commence for a considerable time. In
1884, when an inexpensive method of extracting nickel from copper was developed, mining was
finally brought to the region. The Canadian Copper Company (C.C.C.) was the first to purchase
claims in the region. The C.C.C.soon amalgamated with the U.S. Steel Trust in 1902 to form the
International Nickel Company (INCO), the largest mining company in Canada. The Falconbridge
Nickel Company was founded in 1928. In 1972, INCO built the Super Stack. At the time of its
construction, it was the tallest smokestack in the world.
